A Field Guide to Plugin GAS: Symptoms and (No Known) Cure
Gear Acquisition Syndrome doesn't care that your plugin folder already looks like a phone book. It has never once asked "do you need this." It just shows up during a Black Friday sale and takes over your prefrontal cortex.
Symptoms include:
- Owning four different saturation plugins that all do, functionally, the same thing — and being able to explain, in detail, why they're all different.
- Watching a 40-minute plugin demo video for a tool you will use twice.
- Convincing yourself that this compressor is the one that will finally make your mixes sound "professional," as if the last six weren't supposed to do that too.
- A cart full of plugins at 11 PM that you talk yourself out of, only to buy anyway at 11:15 PM because the discount "ends tonight" (the discount does not end tonight).
- Genuinely believing your workflow is bottlenecked by tools and not, in fact, by finishing things.
The uncomfortable truth
Somewhere in your plugin folder right now is everything you need to finish ten more songs. You know this. You've known it for a while. And you're going to buy the next one anyway, because the hunt is part of the fun — the possibility of a sound you haven't heard yet is its own kind of instrument.
We're not here to cure you. We're just here to acknowledge that this is a real, shared, slightly ridiculous condition — and that there's no shame in it.
